ROCK FALLS – Schools in the Rock Falls Elementary district failed for a second year to meet No Child Left Behind standards in reading.
The school board will receive the district’s report cards, the state’s assessment of the schools, at tonight’s meeting at 7 p.m. in room 3 at Merrill Elementary School, 600 Fourth Ave.
Merrill and Dillon Elementary School, as well as Rock Falls Middle School, did not make Adequate Yearly Progress in reading, Superintendent Dan Arickx said.
Normally after consecutive years of missed AYP standards, a district would have to offer parents the choice to send their children to a different school. But that doesn’t apply in the Rock Falls Elementary district, because it doesn’t have multiple schools serving any one grade.
Students in kindergarten through second grade attend Dillon, while third- through fifth-graders go to Merrill and Rock Falls Middle School educates sixth- through eighth-graders.
In some cases, Arickx said, districts have agreements in which parents may send their students to other districts when AYP is not reached. Rock Falls Elementary School District has no such agreement, Arickx said.
Also tonight, the board will vote to move, and not return, $700,000 from the working cash fund to the operations and maintenance fund to pay for a cafeteria project at Dillon school. The project, expected to cost about $968,600, is on schedule and expected to be done by mid-February, Arickx said.
The board also will vote on the district’s audit report. The district is expected to receive for the second year in a row financial recognition from the state based on revenue to expenditures, the ratio of expenditures to balances, the amount of money borrowed or outstanding, and other factors, Arickx said.
The administrator salary report also will be presented.
The board also will vote on the hiring of a night custodian at the middle school and a food server at Merrill, and for the extension of hours for breakfast servers and breakfast supervisors at Dillon and for the Riverdale Preschool Center custodian and nurse.
