Brian T. Shumack, 39, of Dixon; 4:22 a.m. Sunday in the 100 block of South Galena Avenue; driving under the influence, disobeying a traffic-control device; taken to Lee County Jail.

Andrew M. Near, 20, of Dixon; Sunday in the 600 block of East Third Street; Lee County warrant – failure to appear; posted bond.

Erin K. Fox, 23, of Franklin Grove; 10:42 p.m. Sunday in the 800 block of Franklin Grove Road; driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage, operating an uninsured vehicle, speeding; posted bond.

Joshua David Cramer, 23, of Davenport, Iowa; 10:12 p.m. Saturday; warrant – contempt – nonpayment; given notice to appear in court.

Ogle County Sheriff

Brian J. Speaker, 39, of Rockford; 8:12 p.m. Sunday in the 3000 block of North state Route 251; driving with a suspended license, no insurance; taken to Ogle County Jail.

Mary I. Sexton, 24, of Rockford; Sunday; speeding, McClean County warrant. A passenger in her car, Delia N. Hare, 27, of Rockford, was arrested on a Rockford Police Department warrant; both were taken to Ogle County Jail.

Joseph Smith, 25, of Polo; Friday on state Route 26 and Haldane Road; failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving without a commercial driver’s license after striking a vehicle driven by Floriberto Ruiz, 43, of Freeport. Ruiz was charged with driving without a driver’s license; both given notice to appear in court.

Drill

It was easy to get distracted by the performance of it all. The active shooter drill held by Sterling and County Police last week at the high school. The scenario; two armed shooters in the school killing students and teachers and the police and medical technician's response. It's an unfortunate drill, but a necessary one. In the hallways a Halloween mentality took over, especially when the ketchup-blood concoction was applied on the students. Small talk and "what I'm going to do" plans were passed around freely between laughs and odors of the sickly sweet blood stand-in.
