DIXON – Ferne E. Franz, 87, of Dixon, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at Heritage Square in Dixon. 

She was born Dec. 26, 1924, in Woodland Township, in Carroll County, the daughter of Walter and Mina (Rohde) Hoffman. She graduated from Mount Carroll High School in 1942. Ferne began her working career with A&P Groceries. With her husband, she managed the A&P grocery stores in Mount Carroll, Geneseo and Dixon for many years. Later, Ferne worked for 40 years in the Dixon Township assessor’s office and became the township assessor. 

She married John E. Franz on Jan. 23, 1947, in Mount Carroll. He preceded her in death on Feb. 14, 1975.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Grace Geisz and Faythe Roche; and two stepdaughters, Mary Louise Allegar and Marguerite Babel.

Survivors include three nieces, Alice (Harlan) Ehmen of LaMoille, June (Richard) Houzenga of Thomson, and Janet (Pastor James) Rath of Lake Mills, Wis; eight great-nieces and great-nephews; six great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and five stepgrandchildren, John Schmidt, David Schmidt, Barbara Davis, Diane Neri, and Jackie Babel.

Visitation was Monday at Jones Funeral Home in Dixon. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. today at Heritage Square Chapel in Dixon, with Pastor James Rath officiating, followed by graveside services at 1 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon. 

A memorial has been established to Heritage Square.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."
