Deadline nears to sign up for cook-off

STERLING – Teams still can sign up by Wednesday for the United Way of Whiteside County’s annual chili cook-off, set for Saturday at the corner of Fourth Street and First Avenue.

The cost is $50 per team. Prizes for first, second and third place will be awarded for the best chili, and a people’s choice award also will be given.

Set-up will start at 7 a.m., with public tasting from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets to taste all of the entries will be $5. The winners will be announced at 1 p.m. All proceeds will go toward prizes for this year’s United Way campaign.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."
