Girls tennis roundup: Sterling takes division crown; Sauk fifth at Region tournament

Warriors win NIB-12 West

The Sterling Golden Warriors girls tennis team won the NIB-12 West tournament title on Saturday in DeKalb with 22 points. 

Sterling finished third in the overall standings that include the NIB-12 East. Sycamore had the most points with 32. 

Dixon placed fourth in the NIB-12 West with 11 points. 

Sterling had one third-place finish and two fourth-place finishes. 

Molly Hendricks and Michelle Nickrent beat Dixon’s Jessica Whetsel and Maribeth Johnson 6-3, 6-1 in the third-place match at No. 3 doubles. 

Brooke Hendricks finished fourth in the No. 1 singles bracket and Maura Scanlan was fourth in the No. 2 singles bracket. 

Whtesel and Johnson were the top finishers for Dixon. 

Newman runner-up at Mendota: The Comets scored 24 points behind only Princeton, with 30 points, at the Mendota Invite.

Mary Alice Oswalt won the No. 1 singles title. Lauren Whitlock was fourth at No. 2 singles. 

The No.2 doubles team of Allie Furr and Taryn McKenna placed second, while No. 1 doubles team of Annie Vits and Christina Long placed fifth. 

Women’s tennis

Sauk improves at Region IV tourney: The Skyhawks scored eight points to finish fifth out of eight teams at the Region IV tournament at Sauk Valley
Community College. 

Amanda Kent, a 2012 Dixon graduate, had the Skyhawks’ best finish by placing second in No. 3 singles. She lost to Illinois Valley’s Carly Rosencrans in the championship match 6-1, 7-5. 

Sauk also got third-place finishes from its No. 2 doubles team of Jessica Albers and Molly Ginn and the No. 3 doubles team of Kayla Wilson and Kent. 

Albers and Ginn won two matches against teams they had lost to earlier in the season. 

Sauk improved from an eighth-place finish in 2011. Moraine Valley
won with 18 points,
followed by Waubonsie at 15.
