Lee County state’s attorney candidate Anna Sacco-Miller will attend the 9:30 a.m. council meeting in Harmon, and will answer questions afterward. Sacco-Miller, a Republican, faces Democratic incumbent Henry Dixon in the Nov. 6 general election.

Lee County state’s attorney candidate Anna Sacco-Miller will attend the 7 p.m. council meeting in Sublette, and will answer questions afterward. Sacco-Miller, a Republican, faces Democratic incumbent Henry Dixon in the Nov. 6 general election.

Tuesday

Deadline to register

This is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 6 general election, and the last day for citizens living temporarily outside the country to request an absentee ballot. Applications received after Oct. 7 and before Oct. 27, however, will entitle the voter to cast a federal ballot only.

Wednesday

Grace period begins

Grace period registration and voting begins today. People may register to vote during the grace period, then must vote immediately after they register.

Early voting begins

Anyone who has previously registered to vote can vote early.

17th District debate

17th Congressional District candidates U.S. Rep. Bobby Schilling, R-Colona, and his Democratic opponent, former East Moline Alderwoman Cheri Bustos, will debate at 6:30 p.m. at the WQAD-TV News 8 studio in Moline. The debate, also sponsored by the Moline Dispatch and Rock Island Argus newspapers, will air live.

Oct. 19

Guest bartender event at Long Shot

ROCK FALLS – The Rock Falls Chamber of Commerce invites area candidates to participate in a Hometown Holidays fundraiser and causal meet-and-greet by becoming guest bartenders from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Long Shot Bar and Grill, 3312 West Rock Falls Road/U.S. Route 30.

Candidates can tend bar, sell snacks or just hang out, chamber President and CEO Bethany Bland said in a news release. Tips raised will go toward the annual festival, which will be held Nov. 15-18.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
