DIXON – Hazel Helen Wimmer, 96, of Dixon, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, surrounded by love, at Heritage Square in Dixon.
She was born June 15, 1916, in Chicago, the daughter of William and Grace (Holveck) Wimmer. In later years, her sisters affectionately called her Ann.
Hazel taught elementary school for 35 years, and retired in 1971 after enriching the lives of more than 700 students. Upon graduating from Chicago Teachers’ College, Hazel taught 5 years in Iron Mountain, Mich. Then, she returned to Illinois and finished her career in Westchester.
Hazel bowled competitively, and helped her family develop a love of bowling. She enjoyed traveling with her sisters, nieces and nephews. Also, Hazel liked to read, play word games and cheer for the Chicago Cubs.
She is survived by her sisters, Berniece Martin of Dixon, Grace Carlson of Wheaton and Billie Nolan of Dixon. Many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grand-nephews will remember her lovingly.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her dear sister, Blanche Colvin; four brothers-in-law, William Colvin, LeRoy Martin, Joseph Carlson and Edwin Nolan; a nephew, Bill; a niece, Lynn; two grandnieces, Sarah and Kelly; and a great-grand-niece, Brooklyn.
Cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no visitation. A celebration of Hazel’s life will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 24 at Heritage Square in Dixon. Arrangements were handled by Preston-Schilling Funeral Home in Dixon.
