St. Mary Fright Night auction set for Oct. 13

Trips, sports tickets, pub crawl and electronics up for bid

STERLING – An iPad and Chicago Bears tickets are some of the items that will be auctioned at St. Mary’s School’s annual “Fright Night” fundraiser Oct. 13.

The event is Halloween-themed. Costumes are optional.

A silent auction and dessert auction will begin at 5 p.m. in the gym, 600 Ave. B. A penny raffle and a 50/50 raffle will be held. A buffet featuring pulled pork and fried chicken will be available at 6:30 p.m. The live auction will begin at 8:45 p.m.

Auction items also include a barbecue grill, a 1-night ski trip in Galena, Notre Dame and Chicago Blackhawks tickets, Walt Disney World passes and a 20-person pub crawl in Sterling.

Admission is $30, $50 for a couple and $15 for ages 55 and older.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
