“Boomtown USA: The 71/2 Keys to Big Success in Small Towns” is the title of a book by Jack Schultz, an entrepreneur and businessman from Effingham who will give the keynote address at this evening’s Sauk Valley Symposium.

“Boomtown USA” is also a name that certainly could have been applied to various Sauk Valley communities in days gone by, when steel, hardware and television set production provided thousands of jobs.

The Sauk Valley economy is not what it used to be. Joblessness has languished in the range of 9 percent to 10 percent.

Schultz’s principles for “big success in small towns” provide proven ideas that other communities have used to grow and prosper.

We see no reason why they shouldn’t work here.

That’s why Sauk Valley Media and Sauk Valley Community College partnered to promote a community book read and an author’s presentation. Contributing sponsors are Midland States Bank and Shaw Media.

Schultz knows what he’s doing. His principles have been used to launch and enhance job-creating businesses in towns across the Midwest.

You can hear those principles when Shultz speaks starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Jerry Mathis Theater at SVCC. Also speaking will be Jason Anderson, an economic development director, who will talk about the Rochelle community’s success in creating jobs and investment by using Schultz’s principles.

A public reception for Schultz, starting at 5:30 p.m. in SVCC’s East Mall, precedes the program.

Schultz’s book discusses how various communities respond to opportunity. Some towns recognize opportunity and seize it, while others don’t.

The same goes for individuals.

Tonight is an opportunity to learn more about encouraging “big success” in the community.

We encourage you to attend the program tonight, and seize that opportunity.
