PROPHETSTOWN – A Prophetstown nursing home that helps those with traumatic brain and spinal injuries is expanding.

Last week, Winning Wheels started a project to add a wing with 16 beds and renovate the rest of the nursing home, including adding an extension to the lobby.

Unlike most nursing homes, the residents at Winning Wheels are relatively young, ranging in age from 18 to 62, said Lonnie Nichols, its administrator.

“We stay full with a waiting list,” Nichols said. “We are actually the only facility that does what we do – a true traumatic brain injury facility.”

The nonprofit nursing home is run by a board of directors. It contracts with a management company, American Health Enterprises, to run the 80-bed facility.

Winning Wheels, which started in Prophetstown in 1979, aims to complete the project by August.
