Donations sought for used book fundraiser

DIXON ­ The annual Sauk Valley College Foundation Used Book Sale will be at Northland Mall, 2900 E. Lincolnway, Sterling. 

The hours are from 4 to 9 p.m. Oct. 26, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 27; and noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 28.

The sale will feature used books from paperback to hardcover, romance to suspense, historical to cooking and children’s books, as well as DVDs and CDs. Proceeds from the sale will go toward SVCC scholarships and educational funds.

Anyone who would like to donate books, CDs and DVDs for the sale can drop them off by Oct. 15 at SVCC’s west loading docks, 173 state Route 2. Encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines and Reader’s Digest condensed books will not be accepted.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
