Crundwell's vehicles, trailers to be sold in Chicago

Next auction will be Oct. 20, marshals say

DIXON – Still looking for your chance to score some of Rita Crundwell’s wheels?

The U.S. Marshals Service and Chicago-based Mensik Auto Auction will sell 11 of the ousted comptroller’s vehicles and trailers – including a Hummer and a Lexus convertible – Oct. 20 at Mensik, 3403 S. Lawndale Ave. in Chicago.

Vehicles can be previewed inside and out from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 19, and exteriors only from 8 to 9:30 a.m. the day of the auction, which begins at 10 a.m.

More than 40 vehicles seized in unrelated cases also will be sold.

Mensik, which has had a contract with the marshals for the last 10 years, will get a 6 percent commission.

More information will be available at in the next day or 2, said Jason Wojdylo, chief inspector for the marshals’ asset forfeiture division.

The vehicles were seized at Crundwell’s Red Brick Road ranch on April 17, the day she was arrested on a federal wire fraud charge.

Prosecutors say Crundwell has misappropriated more than $53 million in city funds since 1990. She also is charged with 60 counts of theft in Lee County.

Online and live auctions of her 400 horses, tack, equipment and some trucks and trailers brought in nearly $6.43 million this month. Her 2009 Liberty Elegant Lady Coach sold for $800,000, about $342,000 of which was profit after expenses.

Other vehicles seized from Wisconsin and from her Englewood, Fla., property will be sold at a later date, Wojdylo said. Texas-based Apple Towing Co., which sold the motor home, will handle those auctions.
