Golf: Mustangs take team, individual titles at Fassett

Rock Falls boys third at Mendota Ryder Cup

Led by the co-medalist duo of Reid Hoffman and Greg Magana, the Morrison Mustangs took first in their own Lorrin Fassett Classic on Saturday at Prairie Ridge.

Hoffman and Magana scored a 7-over 79 in the tournament consisting of three twosomes for each school. That tied Sherrard’s Grant More and Johnny Baumunk for low score.

Morrison finished with a 246, seven strokes better than Stockton (253). Riverdale was third (258), and Fulton and Sherrard tied for fourth (260). Amboy was sixth (268), Polo eighth (275), Newman 10th (296), West Carroll 11th (326) and Prophetstown 12th (334).

Morrison’s other two duos also placed in the top 10. Brock Smith and Colton Smith tied for sixth (83), and Sam Ottens and Ben Tegeler tied for ninth (84). Amboy’s Griffin Kozeal and Jake Lucas also tied for sixth (83), and Fulton’s Kyle Wiebenga and Gunner Decker tied for ninth (84). Newman’s top team was Todd Nelson and Matt Wagenecht (87).

Rock Falls 3rd at Mendota: Led by duo Trace Hippen and Logan White’s runner-up finish, the Rockets took third at the 11-team Mendota Modified Ryder Cup.

Hippen and White teamed to shoot a 78, two strokes behind winners Cody Phalen and Dalton Tyler of Mendota. Rock Falls shot a 257 as a team, with Andrew Tichler and Carrigan Chouinard adding an 82. Mendota won with a 245, two better than runner-up Ottawa.

Bureau Valley placed 11th with 316. Ryan Young and Logan Twidell led the way with a 100.

Hawks take fourth: Oregon finished with 93 points, behind Huntley (114), Boylan (106) and Genoa-Kingston (103) in the Genoa-Kingston Invite at the Oak Club of Genoa.

Brian Ostrander and Lane Hawkins paced Oregon with 24 points apiece in the event that used a Modified Stableford scoring system.

Girls golf

Rock Falls 10th, Sterling 12th at Freeport: Rock Falls junior Kara Nehrkorn’s 98 was the low score among locals at the Lady Pretz Invitational.

Jessica Stickel added a 102 for the Rockets, who finished 10th with a team total of 445. Allie Johnson led Sterling with a 108, as the Golden Warriors shot 464 as a team to finish 12th.

Crystal Lake Central won the team title with a 365, three strokes better than runner-up Boylan. Melissa VanSistine of Boylan took medalist honors with an 82.
