Fires in Whiteside County

While attending to a hayfield fire at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 23000 block of Prophet Road, Rock Falls firefighters spotted another fire about a half a mile to the west, on Brooks Road in the Prophetstown fire district. Sterling firefighters called to help with the field fire went to the second fire and found a cabin along the Rock River fully engulfed, Rock Falls Fire Capt. Bill Milby said. The occupants made it out safely. The field fire was started by a burn pile and took about an hour to extinguish; Milby did not know what caused the cabin fire, which Prophetstown Fire Department took command of and which took a couple of hours to douse. Prophetstown could not be reached for comment around 10 p.m. Wednesday; Milby said they were helping with a house fire in Erie.
