Dixon artist connects with dots

Askegaard featured again at ArtPrize

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Kate Askegaard certainly has been dotting the national landscape’s art scene.

The Dixon artist once again will showcase her art Sept. 19 through Oct. 7 at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Askegaard specializes in stippling – art by dots or short brushstrokes. Her piece at last year’s ArtPrize, “True Love,” was a life-size recreation of Michelangelo’s Pieta, made entirely of millions of tiny ink dots.

That piece now is on permanent display at the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum at Inner Harbor in Baltimore. She attended the grand opening of the museum in June.

For 2012, Askegaard is showcasing “A Moment in Time,” a series of six portraits using the same stippling technique for Princess Diana, John Lennon, Martin Luther King Jr., Bruce Lee, Houdini, and Abraham Lincoln.

ArtPrize is a unique art competition in which the winner is decided by public vote. More than 1,500 artists will be displaying their work at more than 160 venues. A Moment in Time can be seen at the Water’s Building, 161 Ottawa Ave. NW, Grand Rapids.

ArtPrize draws more than 500,000 visitors to Grand Rapids. The top prize is $200,000, which draws artists from across the United States and from 55 other countries.
