Better late than never for I-88 bridge safety
Interstate 88 in Whiteside County is among four regional interstates that will have yellow safety barrels positioned in front of concrete bridge abutments. The long-awaited project should save lives.
On Jan. 6, 1992, eight young men from the Sterling-Rock Falls area were killed when the van they were riding in went off the roadway and crashed into a concrete bridge abutment on Interstate 88.
This week, a project to improve safety around such bridge abutments was announced by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Better late than never.
