Interstate safety project starts
IDOT to put in barrels near local bridge piers
DIXON – The state will start a project today that, officials say, will make area interstate highways safer.
The Illinois Department of Transportation plans to put up barrels called “crash attenuators” near bridge piers to provide a “safer cushion” for motorists who leave the roadway, said John Wegmeyer, a project implementation engineer with the department.
“When someone hits one of the center piers, it tends to be a fatal accident,” he said. “Now, people have a better chance of surviving.”
