Show proper respect to flag
Is patriotism dying? While attending the Dixon High School football game Aug. 24, I was shocked and ashamed when the national anthem was played. We all stood and looked for the flag, finally locating it at the far end of the football field, hanging limp in the darkness.
According to proper etiquette, the American flag should be lighted at all times, either by sunlight or by an appropriate light source. Our school officials should know this. Could our flag have a light?
Also, during rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present (except those in uniform) should stand at attention facing the flag, placing the right hand over the heart (the salute). Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with the right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.
