M. Elaine Kerchner

URBANDALE, Iowa – M. Elaine Kerchner, 92, of Urbandale, Iowa, formerly of Walnut and Sheffield, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2012, at Urbandale Healthcare Center.


She was born May 28, 1920, in Rochelle, the daughter of William and Evelyn (Larkin) Kranov. Elaine was united in marriage to Edgar C. Kerchner on June 14, 1944, in Walnut. He preceded her in death on Oct. 31, 2002.

She was a schoolteacher throughout her lifetime at Walnut Grade School, Western Middle School and other area schools. She enjoyed music, playing the piano, painting dishes, crocheting, and quilting.

Elaine is survived by one son, Dr. James (Janine) Kerchner of Spring Valley, Ohio; one daughter Anita (Jim) Behrens of Urbandale; one daughter-in-law, Karen Kerchner of Centerville, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Ronald and William, a sister in infancy; and one daughter-in-law, Sharon Kerchner.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."
