FRANKLIN GROVE – Howard V. Schnell, 78, of Franklin Grove, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at Franklin Grove Living and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Amboy on Dec. 30, 1933, the son of Vernon and Lois (Crawford) Schnell.
Howard farmed and raised Hereford cattle with his father and brother in the Bradford Township area for many years until his retirement in 2006.

He served in the Army for the 804th Field Artillery Battalion in Germany.

Howard was a member of the Lee Center Congregational United Church of Christ; a lifetime member of the Lee County Farm Bureau; the Franklin Grove Living History Antique Equipment Association, where he served as treasurer for many years; the Bradford Community Club; and the Northern Illinois Chapter 2 International Harvester Collectors Club.

He enjoyed flying single-engine airplanes in his younger years; he enjoyed restoring antique tractors and machinery as well as attending antique tractor and threshing shows. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and looked forward to his annual Army "buddies" reunion.

Howard was united in marriage to Elsie Burdge at the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Eldena on March 3, 1957.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two great-grandsons, and a nephew.

Survivors include his wife of Franklin Grove; a daughter, Brenda (Charles) Smith of Polo; one granddaughter, Heather (Roger) Stanfield of Rio; two great-granddaughters, Natalie and Chloe Stanfield; a brother, Roger (Sharon) Schnell of Amboy; and five nieces.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the Lee Center Congregational United Church of Christ.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the church, with Pastor Jack M. Briggs officiating. Burial will follow in Woodside Cemetery in Lee Center with military graveside rites by the Amboy American Legion.
