Taylor Lohse (left) and Ally Stanchfield, both 13 of Dixon, take advantage Monday of beautiful weather, friendship and ice cream along Galena avenue in Dixon. The two stopped at the Cobblestone kiosk where Taylor ate Birthday Cake ice cream in a waffle cone and Ally had Irish Coffee ice cream. Cobblestone will be testing the Dixon market for the next couple months.

This photo isn't technically all that great. The backlight forced me to silhouette the subjects, the background is sort of distracting with geometric inconsistent shapes and that flag thing, and I couldn't get the color to balance very well...but this scene - two young smiling girls enjoying ice cream and their best friend (I'm guessing here) while out riding bikes. If there is a better 21st century Rockwellian scene, I'm not sure I've seen it.

My rosy insight certainly has more to do with my own memories growing up and riding bikes, often down to Brown's Pharmacy, but also of the joy of friendship and company where just spending time with someone is the highlight of your day. There's another version of this photo that I took that showed the traffic whizzing by while the girls just sat and talked. I've reflected much more on this photo than most others, at the time it was photographed just to fill space, but I hope the girls remember this day or maybe I hope they don't because they have so many others like them. I hope we all can be the subject in this photo someday.
