John W. Harden

STERLING – John W. Harden, 83, of Sterling, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012 at home surrounded by his family.

He was born Dec. 27, 1928, in Dixon, the son of Vernon and Barbara (Grobe) Harden and was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dixon. John served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952 and later married Audrey Bos on Sept. 4, 1955 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Sterling.

He was employed as an insurance representative for over 25 years with Aid Association for Lutheran’s (later known as Thrivent). John was a dedicated member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Rock Falls where he served faithfully as an elder, usher and Sunday School superintendent and on the building committee.

It was easy to get distracted by the performance of it all. The active shooter drill held by Sterling and County Police last week at the high school. The scenario; two armed shooters in the school killing students and teachers and the police and medical technician's response. It's an unfortunate drill, but a necessary one. In the hallways a Halloween mentality took over, especially when the ketchup-blood concoction was applied on the students. Small talk and "what I'm going to do" plans were passed around freely between laughs and odors of the sickly sweet blood stand-in.
