Let Dixon be focused on its families again

When are we going to wake up? With many citizens facing adverse conditions in their lives, we are now being asked to vote on a 1 percentage point tax increase on purchases.

This tax is being disguised as a tax for major repairs to Lee County schools. However, each article I read regarding this tax stated, “or could be used for a sports complex.” In my opinion, that is the real reason for this tax.

Then there is the issue of the boat docks. Mayor Burke claims it will bring people from as far away as Rock Falls to our downtown area. Will they boat to Dixon to buy a book or jewelry? The only businesses that may benefit will be the bars and a couple of eating places. Are we promoting boating and drinking now? Will this revenue be enough to pay maintenance, entry and removal of the docks each year?

Dixon is a beautiful town, and we can improve it in other ways that benefit more people than a select few. Let’s get back to family values. Let’s renovate Memorial Pool or build a water park on the land they want for the sports complex. That would generate revenue, jobs and family togetherness.

The country, state and even Dixon (thanks to Rita) are on a downhill slide. Let’s build Dixon back up into a family town again.
