Here are a couple of places to help you keep cool
Heat and humidity don't have to get the best of you. Aloha Shack is serving bubble smoothies in Sterling while Kokomo's Shaved Ice is open for the season in Rock Falls.
Aloha Shack, which has been open for about 3 weeks, serves shaved ice in numerous flavors and bubble smoothies made with boba, also known as pearl tapioca.
Jamie Shierry, 24, and fiance John Brady opened the Shack in the parking lot of Northland Mall, 2900 E. Lincolnway. They also own Urban Outlet in the mall, Shierry said. They are slated to keep the Shack in business until mid-July, when Selmi's returns with its vegetable stand, but they are hoping to stay longer, Shierry said.
Aloha Shack is open from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday, and from noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Kokomo's, 528 1/2 W. Route 30, sells shaved ice and short orders. Siblings Anna and Luigi Sosi of Rock Falls own the stand. They were 10 and 13 when they bought the business in the winter of 1999.
The seasonal stand opened in April and usually stays open until mid-October, manager Mark Anthony said. It is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Call 815-441-0357 to reach Kokomo's and 815-590-1493 to reach Aloha Shack. Both businesses are on Facebook.
