St. John Lutheran to host jazz service

STERLING – St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church will have “Jazz in July.”

There will be jazz-style worship music at the 8:15 and 10:45 a.m. services Sunday at the church, 703 Third Ave.

The public is welcome.

Both services will feature Erik Oberg on the clarinet and Mike McCoy on the trumpet and Erik Boehmke, St. John’s music minister, on keyboard.

Susan Duhn of Blue Feather Alliance also will give a brief presentation. The alliance is a nonprofit organization serving the Oglala Lakota people of Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Members collect and distribute food, clothing and other necessities.

The church accepts donations of non-perishable food items.

Items most needed are oatmeal, peanut butter, jelly, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned soup, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, crackers, boxed dinners, powdered drink mix, applesauce, Pop-Tarts, coffee, pancake mix (add water only), syrup, sugar, flour, canned spam, pudding, gelatin, cereal, toilet paper, dish detergent and dog food.
