Scrap thefts on the rise, sheriffs say; farmer offers $2,000 reward
ROCK FALLS – A rural farmer discovered Tuesday that someone stripped more than $10,000 in copper wire from his irrigation system, Whiteside County sheriff’s deputies said.
The theft, which likely occurred in the last few days, was discovered about 7:30 a.m. in a field on Buell Road south of Rock Falls, Sheriff Kelly Wilhelmi said.
The thief or thieves apparently used bolt cutters to make off with about 1,100 feet of copper wiring.
