Carey's Place reopens

PROPHETSTOWN – You can once again slowly sip a malt while sitting on a bench and staring at a grassy field.

That's because Joe McDonald, best known as owner of McDonald Funeral Homes, has bought and re-opened Carey's Place, the ice cream parlor that has been closed about 3 years.

Carey's Place is at 701 Swanson Drive, also known as "in the triangle" on the south side of town.

The ice cream parlor also serves hot dogs, hamburgers and other short orders.

The parlor has been in Prophetstown under different names for "at least a couple of generations," McDonald said. "It's quite an experience to watch these young kids come in and see the smiles on their faces. It takes you back to when you were a kid and you went to Dairy Queen and it made your day."

He opened for a stint mid September through Thanksgiving, then re-re-opened on May 1. Hours are 11 a.m. to  9 p.m. daily. Call 779-200-5150 for more information.
