Softball roundup: Warriors win in softball, soccer; Rockets fall in extras in Mendota
The Sterling Golden Warriors recovered from a home loss to Geneseo on Thursday with a 10-1 road win over DeKalb.
The Golden Warriors scored five runs in the first inning, sending nine batters to the plate. Stephanie Kester won her 20th game of the season, allowing only three hits.
The Warriors are 25-5, and play at Ottawa on Wednesday. If they beat the Pirates, they will share the NIB-12 West title.
Mendota 3, Rock Falls 2, 8 inn.: Trojans pitcher Ashlyn Kennedy hit the walkoff RBI single with one out in the bottom of the eighth, and the Rockets closed their regular season with a Big Northern West loss in Mendota.
Jordan Giddings took the loss for the conference champion Rockets (28-6, 11-1), who took a 2-0 lead with a run in the top of the third. The game-winning run was unearned.
Cheyenne Burnett had three hits and stole two bases for Rock Falls, which got six innings of work from starter Michaela Ward.
Fulton 7, Erie-Prophetstown 6: Kylie Kennedy only had one of the Steamers’ 17 hits, but it drove in the winning run in a Three Rivers clash in Fulton.
Fulton (8-18, 5-8) overcame a 6-3 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extras. Katherine Wayne got the complete-game win, and only one of the runs was earned.
Jenna Jones had five hits, and Morgan Wierema had two RBIs for Fulton. Hannah Strike drove in two runs for E-P.
West Carroll 6, Newman 4: Kim Durward drove in a pair of runs and earned a complete-game win in a nonconference title in Thomson.
The Thunder (18-15) trailed 3-0 before tying the game in the bottom of the third. They added two off Newman (8-18) starter Laura Turnroth (8-14) in the next inning.
Amboy 7, Byron 5: Amboy took a 6-0 lead and held on to win a nonconference game in Byron.
The Tigers scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 6-5 game. Kiara Kaleel struck out nine and got the win for Amboy (24-3).
Milledgeville 5, Lena-Winslow 2: Courtney Swalve hit a two-run homer to lead the Missiles to NUIC crossover win in Milledgeville.
Jolee Parks allowed three hits and two runs in seven innings. Kayleigh Leddy and Morgan Adolph each added two hits for Milledgeville (19-8).
Soccer
Sterling 2, Peoria 1: Taylor Pomahatch deliver the decisive goal with 7 minutes remaining, as the Golden Warriors closed out their regular season in style in Peoria.
Allie Johnson scored the first goal for Sterling (3-15-3).
