Rockets clinch piece of BNC title
Even with a 6-4 loss in Byron on Tuesday afternoon, the Rock Falls Rockets clinched at least a share of the Big Northern West title.
The Rockets (22-11, 8-3) can win the championship outright with a victory over Byron at home on Thursday. A loss means Rock Falls would share the crown with Winnebago – who the Rockets beat twice this year.
Jace Anderson had two hits and two RBIs for Rock Falls, while Mitch Giddings added two hits and an RBI. Jacob McKenna (3-2) took the loss.
Streator 12, Dixon 2: Dirk Spence had two RBIs, on a solo homer and a single, in a NIB-12 West loss at Veterans Memorial Field.
Spence had three of the six hits for Dixon (5-23, 2-11), while Tevin Johnson doubled and John Thomas tripled. Thomas (1-8) took the loss.
Ottawa 6, Sterling 0: The Golden Warriors dropped to 2-11 in NIB-12 West play with a loss at home to the Pirates.
Rockford Lutheran 2, Oregon 1: Matt Murray struck out four and walked two, but lost a pitcher’s duel at home.
Will Nordman had two hits and Alex Cain scored the lone run for Oregon (11-18) in the first inning.
Morrison 12, Kewanee 2, 5 inn.: The Mustangs took over sole possession of first place in the Three Rivers standings, picking up a run-rule win on the road.
Winning pitcher Brandon Neighbour (6-2) had a pair of hits for Morrison (22-7, 10-3), as did Alexander Volckmann, Blake Blean, Andy Schaver and Alex Fischbach.
Kewanee dropped to 9-3 in conference play. Morrison can clinch at least a share of the conference title with a win today against Erie-Prophetstown, while the Boilers still have a chance to share or win the title outright; Kewanee plays Riverdale today and Bureau Valley on Thursday.
Amboy 11, Marquette 1, 5 inn.: Tyson Powers had two hits and two RBIs and Taylor Ikens repeatedly worked out of jams as the Clippers rolled to a nonconference win at home.
Ikens (3-2) gave up one earned run and three hits with seven walks and five strikeouts, and also added two hits and an RBI. Bailey Appleman also had two hits and drove in a run for Amboy (10-18).
Bureau Valley 8, Henry 2: Ethan Ringle struck out 12 and also had a pair of hits and an RBI to lead the Storm in Manlius.
Cody Mattingly had two hits and two RBIs and Josh Renner drove in two runs for BV (6-22).
Forreston-Polo 5, Durand-Pecatonica 4: Chris Sander doubled, tripled, scored a run and drove in a run as the Cardinals pulled out an NUIC East win in Pecatonica with a tiebreaking run in the top of the fifth.
Colton Meyer and Robert Cornelius added RBIs for Forreston-Polo (19-13, 10-4).
Dakota 13, Milledgeville 3, 5 inn.: Only one of the 13 runs three Missiles pitchers allowed was earned – thanks to seven errors – in an NUIC East road loss.
Kyle Groen had two hits and two RBIs, and Jordan Harris doubled and drove in a run for Milledgeville (2-20, 1-13).
Sterling 5, Morris 0: The Golden Warriors swept a Northern Illinois Big 12 dual meet at home, winning three of the five matches in straight sets.
The two matches that went to three sets were won by Tanner Dir (6-2, 4-6, 6-0) at No. 2 singles and the No. 3 doubles team of Troy Miller and Jonathon Downing (2-6, 6-3, 6-2).
Geneseo 5, Dixon 0: The Dukes (5-11, 1-7 NIB-12 West) lost all five matches in straight sets in a conference dual on the road.
