Girls roundup: Burnett, Rockets run past Bruins

Cheyenne Burnett’s deft baserunning provided the only run of the game as Rock Falls edged St. Bede 1-0 in a nonconference clash Monday at Rock Falls.

In the bottom of the sixth, Burnett walked, went to second on a wild pitch, then to third on a delayed steal as St. Bede’s catcher was throwing back to pitcher Lainie Schweickert. Schweikert’s throw to third got away and Burnett scored, making a winner of Michaela Ward.

Ward (10-2) fired a two-hitter, striking out 10 to lead Rock Falls (26-6). Schweikert was almost as good, hurling a three-hitter and striking out 10 for St. Bede (17-6).

Newman 2, Bureau Valley 1: The Comets pulled out a win in a pitching duel in a game that was originally scheduled to be played in Manlius but was moved to Newman High School in Sterling due to field conditions after Sunday night’s storms.

Newman’s Jaimie Hurd scored twice and Julie Hurd had an RBI single. Laura Turnroth allowed only two hits.

Bailey Roberts drove in a run for Bureau Valley. Taylor Hewitt had eight strikeouts and three walks. The Storm defense committed three errors.

Morrison 11, Erie-Prophetstown 0, 5 inn.: Morgan Ammon and Allie Wiersema combined on a one-hitter as the Fillies clinched at least a share of the Three Rivers Conference title.

Ammon worked four innings and Wiersema one. Morrison (21-6, 12-1) got two hits and two RBIs from Kaitlyn Finneran. Wiersema and Alyssa Workman also had two RBIs, while Ammon had a pair of hits.

West Carroll 9, East Dubuque 8: The Thunder eked out an NUIC West win at East Dubuque, staying alive for the conference crown.

West Carroll (16-15, 9-3) got two hits, one a home run, and four RBIs from Kim Durward, who also earned the save. Teammate Ieshia Larson had two hits and two RBIs.
