STERLING – Gloria Gomez, 56, of Sterling, died Monday, April 30, 2012, at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. She was an operator 1 at Wahl Clipper for 2 years.

She was born Feb. 6, 1956, in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, the daughter of Alejandro and Magdalena (Olivas) Chavira. She married Juan J. Gomez on Feb. 12, 1972, in Sterling. Gloria was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling.

Survivors include her husband of Texas; a daughter, Elizabeth (Jose) Diaz of Rock Falls; two sons, Jose (Jill) Gomez of Washington state and Juan (Maria) Gomez of Sterling; a sister, Nora (Miguel) Rodriguez of Rock Falls; two brothers, Mario (Marianne) Chavira of Rock Falls and Carlos Chavira of Sterling; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Juan Ayala, celebrant, officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling. A memorial has been established.

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
