Violet Bellows

STERLING – Violet Bellows, 99, died Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at Sterling Pavilion Nursing Home.

She was born April 10, 1913, in Cesser, the daughter of Hezza and Lucille (Williams) Minson. She married Elton Bellows on April 15, 1936, in Polo. He died July 7, 1980. She was a lifetime member of Rock Falls American Legion Auxiliary Post 902.

Surviving are her daughter, Lucille (David) Richards of Rock Falls; one brother, Robert (Amy) Minson of Norwalk, Iowa; and special friends, Pat and Wanda Reed and Evelyn Strenge.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Clarence Minson in 1937; and friend, Bob Strenge.

There will be no visitation. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today at Reed Cemetery in Polo, with the Rev. Jason Borton officiating. Arrangements were completed by McDonald Funeral Homes.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
