Man charged in Amboy gas line incident
AMBOY – An Amboy man who hit a gas line with his truck Sunday, evacuating several homes in a rural Amboy neighborhood, doesn’t remember what happened, deputies said Thursday.
Eric A. Schier, 35, was charged Wednesday with failure to report damage to property, a misdemeanor, and with failure to drive on the right side of the road, disobeying a stop sign, and failure to report a change of address to the secretary of state.
Deputies were called about 9 p.m. Sunday to Shaw and Lee Center roads after residents noticed a strong smell of natural gas. They told deputies they saw a man in a truck hit an above-ground gas pipe between a group of houses, then drive off.
About 20 people were evacuated as a precaution; they were allowed back in their homes 21/2 hours later. The truck, which is registered to Schier, was found about a quarter-mile away on Sterling Road with a damaged tire, deputies said.
Schier contacted deputies Wednesday night and admitted he had been in an accident but said he did not remember anything, Lee County Sheriff John Varga said.
Varga declined to say whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
Schier was given a notice to appear in court.
