Know Your Neighbor: Gary Tompkins
Gary Tompkins, 61, owner of Sterling Antiques, was born and raised in Sterling, and graduated from Sterling High School in 1968.
What did you do before buying the antique store? I retired from Slim-N-Hanks in 1995 after working there 27 years. I ran my own construction business until 2004. I bought Sterling Antiques about a year ago.
Family? Two daughters: Cassie Tompkins, 33, of Chicago, and Carrie Tompkins, 35, of Rock Falls.
What are your hobbies? I am a member of Twin City Cruisers car club. I enjoy motorcycle driving. I have been driving for 45 years. I own a Harley.
What is your favorite local restaurant? Forest Inn in Morrison.
What is your favorite type of food? Deer meat and cow.
What kind of music do you like? Rock ‘n’ roll and ’50s and ’60s music.
What is your favorite thing about Sterling? The people. I like to communicate with people.
If you could meet one person, who would it be? Janis Joplin.
What is your favorite TV show? “That ‘70s Show” and “Swamp People.”
How would your friends describe you? Pleasant to be around, positive nature. Someone who knows his stuff.
What is your favorite collectible? Roseville pottery. It shows a great form of art work. It is highly collectible.
