Sterling High School students Alex Rodriguez and Hannah Matheney will compete in the Illinois High School Association state speech tournament Friday and Saturday.

Senior Alex Rodriguez, 18

Q. What category are you competing in?

A. Humorous Interpretation

Q. What made you choose it?

A. Last year I did duets, humorous duet and dramatic duet. This year, I wanted to do a single performance. Humorous Interpretation and Dramatic Interpretation are the singles. Humorous Interpretation is so much fun. It’s a good way to let loose and make people laugh.

Q. What piece will you perform?

A. “I Married a Pope” by Rich Orloff

Q. What made you want to perform this piece?

A. With my piece, I get to play multiple characters. I have to pop in and out of characters. I play a pope, showgirl, and an old woman.

Q. How long have you been on the speech team?

A. I’ve been on the team sophomore, junior and senior years.

Q. Is this your first year going to state competition?

A. This is my second year going to state. Last year, Molly Pashon and I went to state in humorous duet acting. We got ranked 10th. We were close to getting to finals. The top six make it into finals.

Q. What do you like about the speech team?

A. The speech team is a close, tight-knit group.

A. Poetry Reading

Q. What do you like about it?

A. It’s different. Every single poem can be different. It can be funny. It can be sad. You never know what you’re going to see when someone goes up to do it.

Q. What piece will you perform?

A. “What Learning Leaves” by Taylor Mali

Q. What made you want to read this poem?

A. It just has good connecting moments and it’s very interesting, and it gives a good take on teaching.

Q. How many years have you been on the speech team?

A. Since freshman year

Q. Is this your first year going to state competition?
