DIXON – Nationally known actor, comedian and reality show star Andy Dick is coming to town for a night of improvisational comedy and to help out a Dixon Marine wounded in Afghanistan.
Half of the proceeds from the March 3 show, featuring Dick and comedy players from the renowned iO Chicago Theater, will be given to Lance Cpl. Adam Devine, 21, who lost his legs after being wounded by an IED on Dec. 28.
While certainly not for children, Dick’s comedy is geared toward a younger crowd. Organizers hope Devine’s peers will be among those showing their support for Adam at the show, in which five or six iO performers will base their improvisation on Dick’s monologue.
The event, which is being held at the Historic Dixon Theatre, also will include a 50/50 raffle, other raffles and a silent auction. (Items are needed; email info@dixontheatre.com or call 815-994-1787.)
Before the show, the iO Theater will host a comedy workshop for ages 16 and older from 1 to 4 p.m. Dick and iO co-founder Charna Halpern will be the instructors.
The cost is $50 per person. Registration is due by Feb. 24.
Adam lost both of his legs from above the knee; took shrapnel in his right arm; had his left eardrum perforated by glass; and had a broken bone at the base of his spine. He is being treated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.
He and his wife, Michelle, have an 9-month-old daughter. He is the son of Terry and Kim Devine of Dixon, and a 2008 Dixon High School graduate.
Dick was one of the stars of the sitcoms “NewsRadio” and “Less Than Perfect.” He appeared in VH1’s “Sober House 1,” and is a regular on Comedy Central’s celebrity roasts.
Halpern is a Dixon native, the daughter of Jack and Iris Halpern, who own McDonald’s in Dixon, and the sister of Nancy Plock, also of Dixon.
She and Dick are good friends. He is a Chicago iO alum, and Halpern also opened iO West in Los Angeles, where Dick has performed. The Andy Dick Theater is in the back of iO West.
Jodi Elmendorf, one of the Historic Theatre’s board members, also is friends with Halpern. She told Halpern about Devine’s situation, and suggested it would be nice if Halpern could get one of her friends to do a benefit.
“I called Andy, and he said absolutely,” Halpern said Tuesday. “And I always love coming home to Dixon.”
Update on Devine
According to the Facebook page, Join Elbows for Adam, Devine underwent last-minute surgery Tuesday on his right leg to take care of a minor infection, and might become an outpatient next week.
