BYRON – Newman’s Stephen Adamecz and Rock Falls’ Shawn Skinner each had to work a little overtime on Friday night, and the payoff was just what they were seeking.
Adamecz and Skinner each won thrilling overtime quarterfinal matches at the Class 1A Byron Sectional. They are now included in an area contingent of 19 wrestlers who will be competing in the semifinal round, slated for Saturday at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Newman and Erie-Prophetstown each have five semifinalists, Rock Falls has three and Morrison, Oregon and West Carroll have two apiece.
Adamecz was on the verge of losing his 138-pound quarterfinal bout to Stillman Valley’s Travis Hagemann 3-1, but scored a takedown at the buzzer to tie the score at 3-3.
“The coaches were telling me not to tie up with him, stay outside, control his wrists and go for low singles,” Adamecz said. “It worked twice.”
The second time was a mere 12 seconds into overtime, when Adamecz again took Hagemann down. Hagemann had to stop the match three times to be treated for injuries.
“I’m very confident in overtime,” Adamecz said. “Overtime, low-scoring matches – I don’t know, working in practice with Brian Bahrs, he pushes me to perform in tough situations.”
Newman’s other semifinalists didn’t have to sweat out their quarterfinal bouts.
Garrett Webb (120) won 14-2 over Orion’s Mike Dierikx; Maxx Hubbard (132) won 15-5 over Orion’s Chris Zenio; Bahrs (152) won 18-2 over Byron’s Devin Williams; and R.J. Troye (182) won 19-8 over Stillman Valley’s Aaron Person.
The 195-pound Skinner opened with a pin of Mercer County’s Landon McIntosh, then survived an 8-6 OT session against Harvard’s Cody Melson.
Skinner led the entire match against Melson, only to give up a takedown with two seconds left in the third period to tie it up at 6-6.
Both wrestlers were visibly tired in overtime, but Skinner executed a risky throw and put Melson to his back with 15 seconds left.
“I could tell from the way he was wrestling he was getting tired, maybe even more tired than me,” Skinner said. “I had one more burst of energy, and that got me the win.”
Also advancing to the semifinals for the Rockets were Carlos Gutierrez (113) and Derek Dingman (220).
Gutierrez pinned Sherrard’s Jacob Hast in 3:43. Dingman was equally impressive with pins of Caleb Combs of Durand (1:34) in the preliminaries and Pat Hooper of Hebron (4:35) in the quarterfinals.
Brandon McCullough and Mitchell Mallary got Erie-Prophetstown off to a fast start with quarterfinal victories.
The 106-pound McCullough opened with a pin of Genoa-Kingston’s Brent Dehmlow, then slipped past A-FC’s Anthony Hahn 7-4. The bout against Hahn was close throughout, and McCullough sealed it with a late takedown.
It was similar to a match in the regular season, when McCullough scored late to win 6-1 over Hahn.
“Every time we see each other, it’s always a good match,” McCullough. “Before he was just so little. Now that we’re about the same size, it’s always a good match. It could go either way.”
Mallary posted a pair of pins. He opened with a pin of Winnebago’s Justus West in a mere 40 seconds, then finished off Harvard’s Christian Kramer in 3:41 in the quarterfinals.
“Definitely riding tough on top – that’s one of my stronger spots,” Mallary said when asked about the key to his wins. “If I can control the match when the other guy’s down, I think I’ll have a great shot with anybody in the state. Right now I’m just taking it one match at a time. I know I have some great kids coming up.”
Also advancing for the Panthers were Alex Cole (145), a 6-1 winner over Newman’s Brent Gross; Nick Stoddard (152), with pins of Princeton’s Logan McCauley in 1:00 and Lena-Winslow’s T.J. Knutson in 5:57; and Dylan DeShane (182), with a pin of Byron’s Kade Oltmanns in 4:14.
Morrison’s McDonnell twins, Mark and Matt, each cruised into the semifinals via major decision victories.
Mark McDonnell was a 15-5 winner over Byron’s Aaron Bonnell at 145 pounds. Matt was a 12-2 winner over Wheaton Academy’s Peter Ferrill at 195.
Oregon’s two semifinalists are Brandon Sklavanitis (160) and Jake Fassler (220).
Sklavanitis was a 7-2 winner over Jesse Snyder of Mercer County. Fassler won a 7-3 decision over Mercer County’s Bobby Lincoln.
West Carroll’s two semifinalists are Jeff Casey (120) and Zach Hartman (138).
Casey was a 10-1 winner over Ryan Nadig of Lena-Winslow. Hartman opened with a pin of Amboy’s Jason Bontz in 3:49, then gained an 8-5 decision over Harvard’s Travis Heck.
First-round and quarterfinal losers will have a chance to wrestleback today at 10 a.m. in hopes of competing for third place. The top four finishers in each weight class advance to next week’s state tournament in Champaign.
