EAST MOLINE – The first and only Democrat to represent the 16th Congressional District on Thursday endorsed Cheri Bustos in her bid for the party’s nomination in the 17th Congressional District primary.

Former Congressman John Cox, D-Galena, said in a news release Thursday from the Bustos campaign that Bustos “appreciates what Illinois families are going through and what it takes to stand up for them in Congress.”

Cox represented the 16th District from 1991 to 1993 before losing a re-election bid to current Congressman Don Manzullo, R-Egan.

At the time Cox served, the 16th District included Whiteside and Carroll counties, which now are part of the redrawn 17th District.

Bustos is one of three Democrats vying to face freshman Congressman Bobby Schilling, R-Colona, in the general election. Also in the Democratic Party primary on March 20 are Freeport Mayor George Gaulrapp and Greg Aguilar, the director of multicultural services at Augustana College.

In a Jan. 9 blog entry on gaulrapp4congress.com, Gaulrapp reported that 2 days earlier Cox had introduced him at one of three campaign stops to formally announce his campaign.

Yes, pulling knives out of one's back goes with the business more and more and more. John was always for single payer nationalized health insurance; I wonder if Cheri is.
