Rockets crash in final frame
The Rock Falls Rockets could not hold onto a six-point advantage going into the fourth quarter in a 57-56 loss in Mendota on Tuesday.
Jace Anderson scored 19 points for Rock Falls (11-13, 3-8 Big Northern West), which led 39-33 after three quarters. Steven Armoska had 13 points and Tyree White added 11.
Ross Arteaga had 24 points for Mendota (12-13, 3-6).
Geneseo 52, Dixon 47: Hayden Ikens scored 13 points and Scott Goad added 11 for the Dukes in a road loss to the Maple Leafs.
Dixon (1-21, 0-6 Northern Illinois Big 12 West) led 20-19 at halftime but was unable to hang on.
Landon Hoon led Geneseo (4-15, 2-4) with 13 points.
Byron 63, Oregon 41: Caleb Mowry scored 12 points and Tim Smith added 10 for the Hawks (10-14, 1-9 Big Northern West) in a road loss to the Tigers.
Hunter Hill scored 15 to lead Byron (23-0, 9-0).
Riverdale 65, Fulton 44: Wes DeClerq went off for 33 points as the Steamers dropped a Three Rivers tilt at home.
Erik Renkes went 11-for-11 at the free-throw line to lead Fulton (3-19, 1-10) with 17 points, and Nick Fish added 13. DeClerq went 8-for-8 at the stripe and hit five 3s for the conference-leading Rams (19-3, 10-1).
Princeton 78, Bureau Valley 68: Jacob Fisher kept the Storm at bay in a nonconference game in Manlius.
The Princeton senior scored 18 of his game-high 37 points in the fourth period after the Tigers led 49-40 after three.
Bryce Walters led Bureau Valley (10-11), with 23 points.
Eastland 75, Polo 49: Ty Hartman paced a balanced attack with 16 points to lead the Cougars past the Marcos in Lanark.
Also for Eastland (21-3), Tyler Giedd had 15 points, Chase Wilhelms had 12 and Skylar Paulson added 10.
For Polo (11-11), Michael Geary hit seven 3-point baskets and scored 26 points.
West Carroll 59, Forreston 33: Brady Edwards scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and Eric Naples added 11 as the Thunder (22-3) beat the Cardinals in Savanna.
Tanner Bronkema scored 12 points for Forreston (11-10).
AFC 89, Hiawatha 40: Troy Mairs paced a balanced attack with 19 points as the Raiders crushed the Hawks in Ashton.
Also for AFC (12-9), Ermir Ramadani and Ryan Mairs each scored 13 points.
Pearl City 61, Milledgeville 37: Kaleb Ebersole scored 13 points for the Missiles (5-17) in a road loss to the Wolves.
Jason Kurth scored 21 points to lead Pearl City (12-9).
Men’s basketball
Sauk Valley 63, Black Hawk East 62, OT: The teams’ latest Arrowhead Conference nail-biter went the Skyhawks’ way, thanks to some suffocating defense on their home floor.
Black Hawk East (14-11, 3-4) led 37-32 at the half, but Sauk (19-5, 6-1) rallied and even had a look to win in regulation, but Matt Ross’ buzzer-beater didn’t fall.
The Skyhawks hit four of five free-throw attempts in OT and the Warriors couldn’t cash in on either of two tries with 2.9 seconds left, allowing Sauk to survive. Mike Mann and Ryne Vrana led Sauk with 14 points apiece, and Ross, in his first game back from an ankle injury, scored 12 and pulled down 13 rebounds.
The Warriors outlasted the Skyhawks 68-66 on Friday, Jan. 27 in Kewanee.
Women’s basketball
Sauk Valley 63, Black Hawk East 62: Danijela Svircic had 22 points, seven rebounds and four steals to lead the Skyhawks to a home victory over the Warriors.
Also for the Skyhawks (17-6, 4-2 Arrowhead), Shamika Williams had 17 points, 14 rebounds and four assists, and Phyllis Woodard dished out eight assists.
Taradena Mitchell scored 17 points, Sierra Sherrod had 16 and Desiree Howell added 13 for East.
