MOUNT MORRIS – John H. Harris, 92, of Mount Morris, formerly of Polo, passed away Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, at Pinecrest Manor in Mount Morris. He was a postal carrier for 30 years.

John was born Sept. 26, 1919, in Oregon, the son of Daniel Harris and Bessie (Rummonds) Harris. He was united in marriage to Forrest (Compton) Rinard on Feb. 14, 1992, in Polo.

John was a veteran of the Army, earning a Purple Heart during World War II while serving under General George Patton. He was chosen to go with Honor Flight to Washington in May 2011. John was a Master Mason of Mystic Tie Lodge 187, Freeport Consistory, and a Shriner with Tebala Shrine. In 1982, he received a Meritorious Award through the Counsel of Deliberation in Springfield. John also was a member of Mount Morris Moose Lodge, Polo Veterans of Foreign Wars and Polo Area Senior Services. He also was instrumental in establishing the Polo Senior Center. He volunteered with Hospice and was Polo Citizen of the Year.

Survivors include his wife, Forrest; stepson, Donald Rinard; and stepgrandson, Nathan Rinard.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marguerite (Adams) Harris; sister, Dorothy Richman; and brothers, Donald and Winfred Harris.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Polo Family Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Polo. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Dixon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial funds may be directed to St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, Shriners Crippled Children’s Hospital and Pinecrest’s Good Samaritan Fund.
