DIXON – Geraldine “Jerry” Sarah Reis Eckerd, 93, of Big Spring, Texas, formerly of Dixon, passed away Monday, Feb. 6, 2012, in Sterling County, Texas.
Jerry was a 25-year survivor of breast cancer. Although she endured many major health issues in her lifetime, she had a 40-year career as a registered nurse. In 1940, she graduated from Katherine Shaw Bethea School of Nursing in Dixon. Most of her career was spent as an office nurse to Dr. Roy McDaniel in Polo. She always was “running the halls,” working long hours with a positive, caring, upbeat competency.
At the age of 93, she still worked crosswords and cryptograms daily to keep her mind active. She also walked with the Lord daily through the Bible and through example.
She will be greatly missed by her family. They include daughters, Linda (Dr. Clark McDaniel) of Sterling City, Texas, and Dana (Pastor Joseph Myers) of Hampton, Ga.; her loving grandchildren, Chad (Angie) McDaniel and Cory McDaniel, both of Austin, Texas, Bethany Myers (engaged to Daryl Ligon) of Mesa, Ariz., and Sam (Ashley) Myers of Hampton, Ga. She was blessed to meet her two great-grandchildren this past year, Whitney Kate Myers, 11 months old, and Clark E. McDaniel, 4 months old.
She also is survived by several nieces and nephews. The family gives a special thanks to her nieces, Fran Carstens and Mary Jane “Dusty” Lofftus, who were her Macomb family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, in 1994; two sisters; and four brothers.
Cremation rites were accorded. Private burial will be at a later date in Dixon. Arrangements were completed by Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb.
