Dance team captain irked by columnist

Respect is a word that does not often come to mind when having a conversation with someone. Most people today will respect one another and their opinions without having a second thought about it. When giving one’s opinion, people will do that with respect as well.

After reading the column “Not music to my ears” [by sports reporter Larry Brennan] that was published on Jan. 31, I realized that this was not the case with everyone.

I believe that the author did touch on some important issues about the types of music that students listen to today. However, personally attacking the local dance, cheer and basketball teams was an unprofessional and disrespectful way to get an opinion out to the public.

Being a captain of one of the teams that was mentioned in this article, I feel that I need to express our disapproval of the way we were portrayed in this article.

The music that is played during our halftime performances is chosen because of its rhythm, choreography potential, and familiarity to the crowd. The lyrics are edited for any inappropriate content, and the choreography is always tasteful. As a team, we work very hard on perfecting our routines so that our performance is enjoyed by all.

I understand that freedom of speech is a right to all, but that freedom still needs to be presented in a respectful manner. I sincerely hope this author takes that into account when he decides to publish his next opinionated article.

Mrs. Anschutz, Although I strongly and respectfully disagree with your comments, you are certainly entitled to them. So is Kayla, who wrote a wonderfull letter. As a parent of a SHS pom member, I have 2 questions for you. 1. Since you seem to agree so strongly with Mr. Brennan, have you ever been to a Dance team or Pom performance? 2. If you havent would you like to attend one? My family and I would like to formally invite you to the next SHS pom performance. If you choose to go you will find at the ticket desk a game ticket for you, courtesy of my wife and I. Hope to see you there.
