Sterling girls edged in nonconference game in Peoria

For the second time this season, the West Carroll Thunder pulled out a victory in a tightly-contested game on Saturday with rival Eastland. This time the Thunder won 57-55 in Lanark.

The Thunder (21-3, 11-0 NUIC West) used the 3-pointer as a weapon. The team made eight 3s, with Eric Naples making four. Naples scored a game-high 27 points. Jason Bacero made three 3s and scored 15 points.

Chase Wilhelms had 15 points for Eastland (20-3, 9-2). Tyler Giedd added 12 points and Ty Hartman had 11.

Milledgeville 50, Pecatonica 46: The Missiles rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit at home to earn their second win in a row.

Kameron DawTyne led the way with 14 points. Kaleb Ebersole added 11 points and Mitchel Rahn had 10 points for Milledgeville (5-16, 2-7 NUIC East).

Eli Karvelis had 17 points for Pecatonica (2-16, 1-8).

AFC 70, Polo 57: Troy Mairs poured in 26 points to lead the Raiders past the Marcos in Ashton.

Also for AFC (11-9, 5-5 NUIC East), Ryan Mairs scored 16 points and Ermir Ramadani added 10.

For Polo (11-10, 6-5), Michael Geary had 14 points and A.J. Dollmeyer added 13.

NICC Tournament

Sterling Christian 37, Cornerstone 34: The Trojans’ offense came to life in the fourth quarter with 22 points to win the championship game at the NICC Tournament in Sycamore.

David Vroman led the way with 17 points and five rebounds for Sterling Christian (16-5). Adam Dettman, Blake Hudson, Issac Weber and Aaron Clardie each had five points.

The Trojans beat Fulton Unity 54-39 on Friday to advance to the championship game.

Fulton Unity 43, Faith Christian 38: Jeremy Van Buren scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Falcons in a loss to the Knights in the third-place game at the NICC Tourney.

Men’s basketball

Sauk Valley 90, Malcolm X 64: On their home floor, the Skyhawks convincingly avenged a loss to Malcolm X earlier in the season.

Sauk (18-5, 5-1 Arrowhead Conference) jumped out to a 44-22 lead at the half.

Sauk sophomore Mike Mann led all scorers with 22 points and hit four 3s.
