Sterling third at NIIC swim meet

Interone wins 100 breaststroke; Dixon's Helander takes 100 fly

Keanu Interone won the 100-yard breaststroke to lead the Sterling boys swimming team to third place in the Northern Illinois Independent Conference meet on Saturday in Byron.

Normal U-High won the meet with 315 points, comfortably ahead of runner-up IMSA, which had 238. Sterling was third with 196.

Interone won the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute, .15 seconds. He also took third in the 200 IM (2:06.66).

Also having big meets for the Golden Warriors were Keaton Dir, who was second in the 200 freestyle (1:52.84) and third in the 500 free (5:07.91); Michael Schneiderbauer, third in the 50 free (22.61) and fifth in the 100 free (50.87); Tanner Morse, fourth in 1-meter diving (271.85 points); and Michael Fassler, fifth in the 100 backstroke (59.28).

Sterling was also second in the 400 free relay (3:27.24).

Byron placed fourth as a team with 178 points. Leading the Tigers was Dixon junior Aaron Helander, who won the 100 butterfly (52.95) and was second in the 100 backstroke (53.86).

Helander also helped the 200 relay team take second in 1:32.09.

Morrison placed sixth as a team with 99 points. The Mustangs’ 200 free relay foursome of Sumner Latta, Kasey Hodge, Alec Klimson and Nathan Osborn was fourth in 1:43.18.

Newman, which placed seventh with 88 points, was led by Warren Melton. He took fourth in the 100 fly (56.79) and 200 IM (2:07.03).

Melton teamed with Alex DeForest, Gavin Jensen and Collin Ryan to take fifth in the 400 free relay (3:41.45).
