The past year has been an eventful and good year at Sauk Valley Community College.

The culmination of 2 years of hard work in preparation resulted in a successful accreditation visit from the Higher Learning Commission. Although the final report is not finalized, the preliminary report showed SVCC is successful in meeting all the criteria for continued accreditation. The continued accreditation is vitally important to the college and students, because it allows students to receive federal financial aid, assists in the transfer of credits and helps assure quality.

Over the course of this past year, major remodel projects have been designed and constructed. The radiology technology laboratories and classrooms have been completed and are being fully used by students in this dynamic program. The technical wing, which houses welding, wind energy and heating-air conditioning, is being used for those programs while a few classrooms, are in the final stages of construction.

A number of new, exciting programs of study have been developed over this past year. In the area of computer information systems, three programs have received final approval: a degree program, server specialist, and certificates in server administrator and PC technician. Programs in pipe welding and fire science technology have been approved by the Board of Trustees and await final approval by the state, which should take place soon. Also awaiting state approval is the multi-craft technology program, which will be used to expand the current wind turbine technician program to other “green” energy courses of study.

Currently, the college is working on the design for the remodel of the science laboratories. Phase One will be completed this coming summer, with Phase Two anticipated for the summer of 2014.

Finally, the college is developing a plan to improve outdoor signage across the campus. New, improved signs should be in place later this spring as part of an overall enhanced marketing effort.

Watch for open house announcements and a chance to visit the new facilities.
