From story time to adult programs, Sterling library appeals to all ages

STERLING – Sterling Public Library, 101 W. Third St., has a variety of events planned.

Story time, for children 3 to 5, is on Fridays. Featured during the winter-spring session are “Let It Snow!” on Friday, “P-P-Penguins” on Feb. 24, “Miss Anita’s Favs” on March 2 and “Wear’n of the Green” on March 9. The group shares stories, poems, fingerplays, songs and works on a make-it take-it craft.

The Young Adult Department welcomes teens in grades six through 12 for Ink Voices activities. At 6 p.m. Wednesday, the 12th annual 921 Trivia Bowl will be in the library conference room. This year’s theme is “Who Am I?” Students from Dixon, Newman Rock Falls and Sterling high schools will compete. Each team will be given a list of names to study.

The group also will help with the used book sale from 8 to 11:30 a.m. March 3. Books, books on tape or CD and videos will be three for $1 or 50 cents each; magazines will be 10 cents each.

And, there will be young adult meetings at 6 p.m. March 13 and April 10.

Programs for adults will include a meal and a movie at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 28. “Four Daughters” will be shown. The cost is by donation. “The Mating Game” will be featured March 27 and “Goodbye My Lady” on April 24.

The Adult Serious Readers’ Group will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 28 in the library conference room. The February book is “The Speed of Dark,” by Elizabeth Moon. The group also will meet at 6 p.m. March 27 with “The Road,” by Cormac McCarthy and April 24 with “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” by Garth Stein. The books are available at the library for cardholders.

Mexican Train dominoes is played the first Saturday of each month. The cost is $7. The doors open at 2:30 p.m., and play begins at 3 p.m. Prizes, snacks and door prizes complete the event. Proceeds go to the Sterling Storytelling and Arts Festival, which is on Labor Day weekend.

All ages are welcome for free computer classes at the library by registration only. Call or stop by to sign up. The schedule is 1 to 3 p.m. March 1 for What’s New Office 2010; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 10 and 1 to 3 p.m. April 11 for Office for the Workplace Part 1 and 2; 1 to 3 p.m. April 17 is an open lab; 1 to 3 p.m. April 23 and 25 is Word Level Two Part 1 and 2; and 1 to 3 p.m. May 8 and May 10 are for Excel Level One Part 1 and 2.
