U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords announced Sunday that she would resign her Arizona congressional seat to concentrate on her recovery from a severe gunshot wound to the head just over a year ago.

We wished she had been able to continue to serve, because her resilience, her very public rehabilitation, and her complete absence of self-pity were truly inspiring, especially to those who have suffered severe physical setbacks.

After being shot by a man found to be mentally ill – although we prefer the less politically correct term “insane” – she could neither speak nor walk. Now, after herculean effort and remarkable medical help, she can do both, although sometimes haltingly.

Her decision to step down was selfless. Giffords, 41, could have easily won re-election, even in her debilitated condition.

She has written: “I will get stronger. I will return.”

We hope so – if not to Congress, at least to some other field that could be illuminated by her sunny spirit.
