STERLING – Despite Sunday’s relative warmth, the area has not seen the last of the snow yet.

A little less than an inch is expected to fall today, accompanied by westerly winds 20 to 30 mph, gusting to around 35 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

The high will be around 37, but will dip to 28 by 4 p.m. Tonight will be breezy with a low around 17.

It will be sunny Tuesday, with a high of 28 and a low of 18, the weather service said.

Although the roads were fairly clear by Sunday, snow and ice led to treacherous driving conditions Friday and Saturday.

An accident Saturday sent a Freeport man and a 5-year-old boy to the hospital.

Samuel J. Couch, 54, was southbound on Freeport Road, just south of Pilgrim Road, when he lost control of his vehicle while on a curve and hit a guardrail before coming to a stop in the ditch.

He and the boy were taken to CGH Medical Center, treated and released. Couch was cited for driving too fast for conditions.

Four other accidents were reported by area agencies Saturday. In all cases, drivers and passengers were wearing seat belts and there were no injuries.

– Donelle Waever, 41, of Amboy, was westbound on Interstate 88 in Whiteside County at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, lost control and hit a guardrail. Waever was cited for improper lane usage.

– John L. Slonneger, 64, of Sterling, was westbound on I-88 Saturday in Whiteside County when he lost control, veered into the median and back into the westbound lane, striking a car driven by Jeffrey P. Coomer, 52, of Newton, Iowa.

Slonneger was cited for driving too fast for conditions.

– Carla J. Merlak, 55, of Huntley, was southbound on I-39 in Lee County at 1:54 p.m. Friday when she attempted to change lanes and struck a vehicle driven by James H. McNeill, 31, of Portage, Wis., causing it to leave the road. Merlak was charged with improper lane usage.

– Nicholas D. Grove, 22, of Grimes, Iowa, was westbound on I-88 in Whiteside County at 12:12 p.m. Friday when he attempted to pass a truck, lost control and landed in a ditch.
