Spots open for this afternoon’s tourney

The Coloma Township Park District is still taking registration for the 38th annual youth bowling tournament to be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Paone’s Blackhawk Lanes in Sterling.

Youth between the ages of six and eighteen are invited to participate in this annual tournament.

Entry is $12, which includes lane and shoe rentals. Registration forms are available at the Coloma Township Park District Administrative Office, 508 E. 11th Street, Rock Falls.

Hawks hold off Sharks, win 4-3

Jonathan Toews and Viktor Stalberg each had a goal and an assist, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat San Jose 4-3 in Chicago and ended the Sharks’ eight-game point streak.

Dave Bolland and rookie Andrew Shaw also scored for Chicago, which has won three of four and is 3-0-2 in its last five. Shaw’s goal was his fourth in seven games since being recalled from the AHL.

Bradley wins, snaps nine-game skid

Dyricus Simms-Edwards had 26 points and Taylor Brown scored 23 as Bradley snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 78-67 victory over Northern Iowa on Sunday in Peoria.

Walt Lemon Jr. added 16 points for the Braves (6-13, 1-6 Missouri Valley), who overcame a 16-point second-half deficit to win for the first time since
Dec. 15.


Fine’s accuser admits he lied

A prison inmate who was one of four men to accuse former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine of sexual abuse when they were children has admitted that he made up his claim.

The accuser, Floyd
VanHooser, wrote in a letter that he lied to police and in December interviews with The Associated Press and The Post-Standard newspaper of Syracuse. He said he wanted to get back at Fine, because he did not hire a lawyer to help VanHooser fight a criminal conviction.

Fine had helped raise the 56-year-old VanHooser after his parents died.

A’s Colon agree to one-year deal

The Oakland Athletics and free agent right-hander Bartolo Colon have reached agreement on a one-year deal that will bolster the team’s depleted rotation, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said Sunday.
