More Whiteside incumbents running
Sterling Republican, Cox, latest to file; Paw Paw board member to run in Lee
MORRISON – Three-fourths of the members of the Whiteside County Board are running for re-election.
The latest to file is Dick Cox, R-Sterling, who represents District 1. District 3’s Bud Thompson, R-Prophetstown also recently filed. In total, 21 of the 27 members of the board are seeking re-election.
Dan Bitler of Albany filed as a Democrat for County Board District 3. He ran unsuccessfully for the County Board in 2010 and lost. In that race, he said he wanted to provide representation for western Whiteside County.
He joins three other candidates who aren’t on the board.
More than nine candidates from a particular party are required to have a competitive primary contest in a Whiteside County board district. That hasn’t happened in any of the county’s three districts.
If there is no competition, all candidates are in the Nov. 6 general election.
On Wednesday, Karl Kovarik, Whiteside County’s 911 coordinator, filed as a Democrat for circuit clerk. Susan Ottens, a Republican, who was appointed to the post earlier this year, is seeking re-election. She has been with the office since 1988.
In Lee County, District 2’s Lisa Zeimetz, R-Paw Paw, filed her re-election papers Wednesday.
State’s Attorney Henry Dixon, a Democrat, announced his candidacy for re-election Wednesday; he said he planned to file papers today.
The last day for candidates to file is Monday. The Democratic and Republican primaries are March 20.
